Authentic Learning Element 4

"Multiple perspectives and different points of view"

Let's explore the fourth element of Authentic learning which is to "Multiple perspectives and different points of view with the video below -

Talking Politics: Valuing Different Perspectives

In each learning environment, there are multiple perspectives to every concept taught potentially contributing to the learner’s understanding and placing value on learning. Students when assigned a task or expected to understand concepts usually will narrow down to a single point of view as it is  the norm which needs to be broken off from. In all works of life be it in the humanities, sciences, business, there are multiple perspectives on any given focus area. If this is the case, then authentic learning should allow for learners to understand the value of incorporating diverse perspectives into their learning from many different point of views.

Amongst many benefits of incorporating multiple perspectives in the classroom activities, keeping educators sincere and accountable to students ensuring that they are not boxed in with a possible outdated or even single restricted perspective stands out. A well-designed authentic learning activity encourages students to utilize diverse range of resources from expert engagements, collaboration, access to databases of articles from professional journals and publication, newspapers, television and radio, simulations, field trips. These access to multiple resources and perspectives however place the responsibility on the student to carefully select appropriate and most relevant content for their research.

The practice for student’s learning should take the route of considering multiple views and conclusions as it is more engaging and mind opening to critically evaluate different opinions, research findings and possibilities than narrowing down to just one point of view.

In Ellen Langer’s book – Mindful learning, she describes Mindless learning as “an entrapment in old categories; by automatic behaviour that precludes attending to new signals; and by action that operates from a single perspective “.
